History & Origins of the Sawtooth Star Block

Originating in the early 1800s, the Sawtooth Star features 8 sharp triangular points surrounding a prominent central square. The large center provides a perfect showcase for fussy cuts, embroidery, or bold contrast fabrics.

Piece Cut List

12" Finished BlockCut 1 center square 6.5" (Fabric C), 4 background corner squares 3.5" (Fabric A), 4 geese rectangles 6.5" × 3.5" (Fabric B), and 8 sky squares 3.5" (Fabric A).
8" Finished BlockCut 1 center square 4.5" (Fabric C), 4 background corner squares 2.5" (Fabric A), 4 geese rectangles 4.5" × 2.5" (Fabric B), and 8 sky squares 2.5" (Fabric A).

All measurements include a standard ¼" seam allowance. Finished block size: 12".

Step-by-Step Visual Assembly

Make 4 Flying Geese units (6.5" × 3.5") using Fabric B geese and Fabric A sky corners.

Sew background corner squares (3.5") to both ends of top and bottom Flying Geese units.

Sew remaining two Flying Geese units to left and right sides of 6.5" center square.

Join top, middle, and bottom rows together matching all seam intersections.
