History & Origins of the Pinwheel Block

A lively American classic dating to the early 19th century. Built from 4 Half-Square Triangles rotated in sequence around a central point, the Pinwheel creates an optical illusion of spinning blades across a quilt top.

The cut measurements below update to match.

6" Finished BlockCut 2 squares 4" Fabric A and 2 squares 4" Fabric B (makes 4 HSTs trimmed to 3.5").

All measurements include a standard ¼" seam allowance. Finished block size: 12".

Step-by-Step Visual Assembly

1

Piece 4 identical HST units trimmed to 6.5" square.

2

Rotate HST units in sequence so the blade triangles point in a continuous rotational direction.

3

Sew the top 2 HSTs into the top row, and the bottom 2 HSTs into the bottom row.

4

Join the two rows at the center seam and 'twirl' or spin the center seam allowance to press completely flat.
