History & Origins of the Rail Fence Block

A timeless, fast-piecing favorite that uses pre-cut strip sets. By alternating blocks between horizontal and vertical orientations, quilters create a woven optical zigzag or staircase pattern across the quilt top.

Piece Cut List

12" Finished BlockFor a 2×2 block with 4 quadrants: Cut 4 strips 2.5" × 6.5" Fabric A, 4 strips 2.5" × 6.5" Fabric B, 4 strips 2.5" × 6.5" Fabric C (or sew three 2.5" × WOF strips and sub-cut into four 6.5" square quadrants).
6" Finished BlockCut 4 strips 1.5" × 3.5" Fabric A, 4 strips 1.5" × 3.5" Fabric B, 4 strips 1.5" × 3.5" Fabric C.

All measurements include a standard ¼" seam allowance. Finished block size: 12".

Step-by-Step Visual Assembly

Sew 3 contrasting fabric strips (Fabric A, B, C) together along long edges to create a 3-rail strip set.

Sub-cut strip set into four 6.5" square quadrants.

Arrange 4 quadrants in a 2×2 grid, alternating horizontal and vertical rail directions.

Join quadrants into rows and sew center seam.
